Geoengineering: Global Salvation or Ruin?
Geoengineering: Global Salvation or Ruin? Should humans address man-made rising temperatures and sea levels by tinkering further with mother nature? A lively debate about geoengineering has burst into the mainstream recently with reference to Ken Caldeira's work in the final chapter of the popular book SuperFreakonomics. This panel takes a measured look at the good, bad and ugly of what could and should be done. What is technically feasible? How could new tactics be tested? Does the mere possibility of geoengineering diminish efforts to reduce carbon pollution? Our speakers share their distinct perspectives on this passionate environmental topic. Sick & Tired: How America's Health System Fails Patients
Sick & Tired: How America's Health System Fails Patients As an active person, Helene Jorgensen decided to enjoy a hike in the mountains one afternoon while attending a conference in Montana. Warned by friends to beware of bears, Jorgensen was attacked by a creature much more menacing -- the Rocky Mountain wood tick. Sick and Tired is the story of Jorgensen's subsequent illness and her descent into the quagmire that is the American health care system. Returning home from her trip, Jorgensen is quickly debilitated by a mysterious illness and sets out to find a diagnosis and cure. Along the way, she is seen by countless doctors, none of whom seems to be able to diagnose her accurately. She undergoes two surgeries, is forced to quit her job as a labor economist, and is saddled with countless bills and denied payment for claims. Jorgensen quickly learns that the health care system does not work; finally diagnosed with Lyme disease, she struggles for years to receive proper medical treatment. Based on the author's notes and observations, statistics, and survey data, Sick and Tired details the health care system's failings and lays out arguments to fix it. As an economist, Jorgensen takes a critical look at conflicts of interest between doctors, pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic laboratories, and insurance companies that restrict treatment options and increase patient charges. While millions of Americans negotiate the health care system, and try to make sense of health care reform, Helene Jorgensen's saga may prove an important consideration in the national debate. She provides advice about how to seek better and more affordable medical care from physicians, health plans, and elected officials. Physics, Finance and Some Useful Mathematics
Physics, Finance and Some Useful Mathematics As part of a groundbreaking new Initiative for the Theoretical Sciences (ITS), the Graduate Center presents a talk by Marc Potters, co-CEO of Capital Fund Management, one of France's oldest alternative investment management firms. After a Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton University and postdoctoral work at the University of Rome, Potters joined CFM, where he now serves as director of research. He has made substantial contributions to many problems in quantitative finance, and is the coauthor, with Jean-Phillippe Bouchaud, of the major modern text on these issues, Theory of Financial Risk and Derivative Pricing: From Statistical Physics to Risk Management (Cambridge University Press, 2003). His work, and that of his colleagues, shows how theoretical ideas developed to understand one part of the world find application in unexpected places. Moeed Ahmad: Al Jazeera on the Front Edge of Media
Moeed Ahmad: Al Jazeera on the Front Edge of Media Much was made of the importance of Twitter and other forms of social media during last year's Iranian election. But were the tweets out of Iran really representative of the view on the ground? Social media sites are being embraced throughout the developing world: even in countries where repressive regimes limit freedom of speech and media access. It's a situation that presents new opportunities - and pitfalls - for journalists. Moeed Ahmad is the head of New Media at Al Jazeera, and he provides a unique, inside perspective on the use of these websites in the Middle East at the Media 2010 conference in Sydney. Uncommon Knowledge: Fox and More with Roger Ailes
Uncommon Knowledge: Fox and More with Roger Ailes Fox News CEO Roger Ailes talks about his recipe for a successful news network. "I recognized that the American people did not want to be told what to think about the information they were receiving...We just want a dialogue, and we believe the ideas and the issues will sort themselves out." Is Ailes a conservative? Does Fox News shape the nation's politics, as many on the left claim? Ailes responds. He also offers up his expertise to our current commander-in-chief. "[Barack Obama] is underexposed and overexposed. He said he was going to be transparent. He is not. So that is underexposure. Yet he is on television every time I look at the television set. He is overexposed, but he is not letting us in on any of the inner workings of what he is trying to accomplish." William Ayliffe: The History of Cataract Surgery
William Ayliffe: The History of Cataract Surgery The commonest operation in the world is responsible for restoring sight to millions of blind and visually disabled people every year. From humble beginnings in India over 2,000 years ago it was refined by French surgeons in the Enlightenment. Over the last few decades this operation has been transformed from a risky operation almost identical to that performed by Victorian Surgeons, into a sophisticated quick day case procedure with extremely low complications. The development of new materials by the British aircraft industry was critical to this development and the courageous adoption of pioneering surgeons all over the world, criticised by their peers at the time, has led to the miracle of modern cataract surgery. Kati Marton: Enemies of the People
Kati Marton: Enemies of the People When award-winning journalist and author Kati Marton went to Hungary to research her family's life there, she expected to find some good material. After all, her parents were reporters for the AP and UPI during the heart of Hungary's Cold War past. Still, it was a bit of a shock when the archivists brought her "shopping carts full of documents about my family." In fact, Marton's parents were among the most investigated people in all of Hungary. In her latest book, Enemies of the People: My Family's Journey to America, she discusses her memories of growing up in Cold War-era Hungary, and describes her efforts to uncover her family's buried past.
