Martin Rees: Life's Future in the Cosmos President of the Royal Society, England's Astronomer Royal, Lord Martin Rees brings a lifetime of cosmological inquiry to a crucial question: What if human success on Earth determines life's success in the universe? He thinks that civilization's chances of getting out of this century intact are about 50-50. He is hopeful that extraterrestrial life already exists, but there's no sign of it yet. But even if we are now alone, he notes that we may not even be the halfway stage of evolution. There is huge scope for post-human evolution, so that "it will not be humans who watch the sun's demise, 6 billion years from now. Any creatures that then exist will be as different from us as we are from bacteria or amoebae." Appropriately, Rees's Long Now talk was at the Chabot Space & Science Center in the hills above Oakland, in the planetarium. John G. Roberts: A History of the US Bill of Rights As public debate about whether Australia should enhance our constitution by taking up a Bill of Rights, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court John G. Roberts explores the differences between the U.S. and Australia. The visiting judge was careful to say he didn't have an opinion on whether Australia should or shouldn't go down the Bill of Rights path itself. But, Roberts did illuminate just how torturous and fraught the process was for America, as well as the specific historical circumstances and strong personalities that came into play. Along the way he explores the implications the U.S. Bill of Rights has had on the history of the United States in areas such as property ownership, crime and the abolition of slavery. The talk was presented by the Law Faculty at University of Queensland at Brisbane's Banco Court, with introductions by Queensland's Chief Justice Paul de Jersey and UQ Law Professor Ross Grantham. Justin Halpern: Sh*t My Dad Says After being dumped by his longtime girlfriend, twenty-eight-year-old Justin Halpern found himself living at home with his seventy-three-year-old dad. Sam Halpern, who is "like Socrates, but angrier, and with worse hair," has never minced words, and when Justin moved back home, he began to record all the ridiculous things his dad said to him. More than a million people now follow Mr. Halpern's philosophical musings on Twitter, and in this book, his son weaves a brilliantly funny, touching coming-of-age memoir around the best of his quotes. An all-American story that unfolds on the Little League field, in Denny's, during excruciating family road trips, and, most frequently, in the Halperns' kitchen over bowls of Grape-Nuts, Sh*t My Dad Says is a chaotic, hilarious, true portrait of a father-son relationship from a major new comic voice. Karen Armstrong: The Mystery of Compassion Karen Armstrong is a British author of numerous works on comparative religion, who first rose to prominence in 1993 with her highly successful A History of God. A former Catholic nun, she asserts that, "All the great traditions are saying the same thing in much the same way, despite their surface differences." They each have in common, she says, an emphasis on the transcendent importance of compassion, as epitomized in the so-called Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Awarded the $100,000 TED Prize in February 2008, she called for drawing up a Charter for Compassion in the spirit of the Golden Rule, to identify shared moral priorities across religious traditions, in order to foster global understanding. It was unveiled in Washington, D.C. in November 2009. Signatories include Prince Hassan of Jordan, the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Sir Richard Branson.
